It's 2021 and is Anyone Really Surprised?

I came here tonight to post what I thought was my first poem of the year but then I double checked the notes in my phone and discovered that I wrote one, a little tipsy, in the wee hours of January 1st. I'll share the one I wrote tonight. I want to keep working away at words this year and see what I come up with.

Today was mentally a tough one. And that was before the government announced that virtual learning is to continue under strict stay at home orders. Oh joy! However, as the day was coming a close, I was inspired to open the computer and type two words: heartbreak and heartmend (hey, poetic license!). I am grateful for many things in my life but the ability to expand and grow and love even more after loss continues to humble and amaze me and for that I am immeasurably grateful. I'm going to hold onto that thought as I wrap up this day.

Heartmend

A heart does not break just once

It shatters with every remembrance

Into unrecognizable pieces

It can remake itself

Through some force

Reassembles

A thousand tiny fault lines

A beautiful resilient network of scars

That hold the universe in
